I started my first training company in Gold’s Gym almost 30 years ago. I had always dreamed of being be a personal trainer. I never wanted to own a studio or any business. But, I did feel that everyone should have the benefit of personal training without the hefty price tag. So that’s why I started my first group training studio, to make my method of safe & effective exercise training more accessible and affordable.
The first studio was on the second floor of what’s now South Beach Bar & Grill. We loved it there and would’ve stayed had we not been booted out by fish tacos and alcohol. But, hey, it’s OB, and we understand.
We then found our happy forever home on Santa Monica Avenue, in the classic building locals know as “Scrimshaw Square.” Our neighbors include a crystal shop, a tea shop, and a tarot card reader, among other wonderful neighbors. We’re proud to serve OB and all the locals here for 20+ years.
Jennifer Opaka’s fitness journey began over two decades ago, teaching aerobics during the era of spandex and leg warmers. Her passion for guiding clients toward their fitness goals led her to become a personal trainer, with roles at the Marriott Corporation in San Diego and collaboration with Jeff Kohli at Peninsula Athletic Club. There, she honed her expertise in strength training for aging and rehabilitating populations. Jennifer holds certifications from ACE and ACSM, is a 400-hour trained Pilates instructor, and has taught at San Diego State University’s Personal Training Certificate Program.
Founding Progressive Fitness, Jennifer emphasized client-focused training, crafting realistic programs tailored to individual needs. She has worked with clients aged 16 to 95, addressing weight loss, strength training, balance improvement, mobility, and pain management.
While serving San Diego has been rewarding, Jennifer is now expanding her mission globally. The Opaka Method offers ball kits with self-healing guides, online videos for targeted problem areas and full classes, and partnerships with studios for bulk kit orders. With more instructors and classes, Jennifer aims to help individuals worldwide achieve optimal health.
